| New Zealand Made Terracotta |
The warm everlasting variegated colours of terracotta tiles, which can range from deep reds and browns through to cream and even ochre tints creates a long lasting floor, which transcends fashion. Natural terracotta tiles are timeless and have been in fashion for 4,000 years, they have often been copied but have never been replaced.
Important features of Middle Earth Natural Terracotta tiles are:
- Tiles are factory treated to reduce water absorption
- Terracotta tiles are non-slip and perfect for outdoor paving
- Used outside the tiles will not dazzle you in bright sunlight
- Middle Earth tiles are colourfast and will not fade with age
- Terracotta tiles are perfect for under-floor heating, acting as a heat soak retaining heat remarkably well
- Terracotta tiles are easy to maintain and are long lasting, they have no pattern or glaze to wear out

NOTE: Colour and shade variation are inherent qualities in all fired ceramic products. With all hand made products there will be slight variation in the actual tile size, any tile size should be treated as an indication only.

Middle Earth Terracotta Tiles are natural terracotta tiles with the colour created in three ways:
1. Colour of the clay - Middle Earth tiles are made from two clay colours. These are buff coloured clay, which is mined at our factory site in Warkworth, and red clay, which is extracted at Matakana. The yellow/ochre colour is due mainly to the blend of clays when the clays are combined in various proportions to create the unique Middle Earth colours.
2. Firing temperature, tile placement in the kiln and flashing - Firing temperature is critical in the developing of the tile colours. As a rule of thumb, the darker the colour the higher temperature the tile is fired. The characteristic flash or flame marks occur if two tiles touch, are fired close together or by reducing the air intake to the gas burners in the kiln, this lets the flame “burn” the tiles to create the unique flashing colours.
3. Adding a colouring oxide to the clay mix - For Middle Earth Gunmetal and Doeskin coloured tiles, adding an oxide to the clay in the mixing process creates the colour. The oxide is thoroughly mixed into the clay creating a homogenous colour all through the tile. The clay is then extruded into tiles in the normal process.
